Flying with children is enough logistics on its own – the ride to the airport should not become another open question. Yet this is exactly where uncertainty reigns: does my child need a car seat in a taxi? What does the law require, and who provides the seat? This guide clarifies the legal position and shows how a family transfer to FRA works stress-free.
What § 21 StVO requires
The rule in a private car is clear: children younger than twelve and shorter than 150 cm may only travel in a suitable, officially approved child seat or on an appropriate booster (§ 21 of the German road traffic regulations, StVO). Only from 150 cm in height or the twelfth birthday is the normal seat belt sufficient.
The taxi exemption – and why it does not really help parents
For taxis the law provides a limited exemption: the duty to secure children in restraint systems is restricted to two children weighing 9 kg or more on the rear seats, with at least one seat to be carried for a child between 9 and 18 kg. Anyone who transports children regularly cannot rely on the exemption at all.
So a ride without a proper seat may be legally permissible in an individual case – physically, it never is. A child is safer in the right seat on every ride, regardless of what the law allows the taxi trade. The exemption solves the driver’s problem, not the parents’.
